To judge whether a switch is an ordinary switch or a PoE switch, the method is very simple, which can be judged by the appearance of the product with the naked eye.

How to identify ordinary switch and PoE switch. 

1. Look at the switch panel. 

You can view the panel. Some brands print the switch name and model on the panel PVC, and the LED indicator on the panel often bears the PoE logo. 

2. Look at the power parameters. 

PoE switch using external power supply, its power adapter is often marked with detailed parameters, judging from the supply voltage, if it is 48V, it is a PoE switch, if it is 9V/12V, it is usually an ordinary switch. 


Switches with built-in power supplies cannot see the power parameters, but some products will mark the rated power on the product label, and if the power value is large (usually greater than 150W), it can basically be judged as a PoE switch. 


How to identify standard and non-standard PoE switches.

After judging from the appearance that a switch is a PoE switch, how can you tell whether it is a standard PoE or a non-standard product? 



First of all, a rough judgment is made from the supply voltage: 

There is no doubt that all the standard power supply voltage is not 48V, are non-standard products, such as the common 12V power supply products 24V. However, 48V power supply is not necessarily a standard PoE product, which requires the use of voltage measurement tools such as multimeters to identify whether it is Li Gui or Li Kui. 



The method of measurement with a multimeter is as follows: 

Start the equipment, adjust the multimeter to the voltage measuring gear, and touch the power supply pin of the PSE device with the two meter pens of the multimeter respectively (usually the RJ45 port 1, 2, 3, 6 or 4, 5, 5, 7, 8). The equipment with stable output of 48V or other voltage values (12V, 24V, etc.) is a non-standard product.Because in this process, PSE does not test the powered equipment (in this case, the multimeter), but directly uses 48V or other voltage values for power supply. 



On the contrary, if the voltage cannot be measured and the multimeter needle jumps between 2V and 10V, it is a standard PoE. Because at this stage, the PSE is testing the PD side (in this case, the multimeter), and the multimeter is not legal PD,PSE will not supply power, no stable voltage will be generated. 

Stay away from non-standard PoE products. 


In many cases, users prefer to use non-standard PoE products in order to save costs, and the loss often outweighs the gain.Because the power supply mechanism of the non-standard product determines that it does not have any protective effect on the powered equipment, the burning of the terminal equipment occurs from time to time, which saves the initial engineering cost, but greatly increases the maintenance cost in the later stage. 

It can be said that: all the standard PoE products produced by regular manufacturers will not "burn out the terminal" under the normal operation of the equipment. Many people do not know much about PoE, so that there is a false argument that "PoE is unstable and easy to burn equipment", which is unscientific. It is recommended that everyone be cautious about the use of non-standard PoE products, network security power supply, right in you and me. Let the non-standard be stillborn and let the GB go to the world.
